ARE YOU A PARENT OF AN INACTIVE TEEN (AGED 13-16)?
DO YOU FIND IT HARD TO MOTIVATE YOUR CHILD TO BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE?
If so, you may be eligible to take part in a research study (and receive $30)

What’s involved?
We are looking to recruit parents of adolescents and their adolescent children (aged 13-16) to take part in a study that examines the role of parents in the promotion of adolescent physical activity. If both you and your child agree to participate, you will both complete a questionnaire (in your home) on 2 separate occasions (September & October 2010). This will take approximately 20 minutes. In addition, you will be invited to be part of a parenting program that consists of a workshop (3 hours) and a follow-up support program (in either September or November 2010).

Am I eligible to participate?
To be eligible, your child has to live with you at least 50% of the time and you must be his/her biological parent or legal guardian. In addition, your child has to be between the ages of 13-16 years of age at the time of enrollment in the study. Only one parent and adolescent per household will be eligible for inclusion in this study. In addition, only adolescents who do not meet current physical activity guidelines (i.e., less than 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity) will be eligible to participate.

What are the benefits of participating in this study?
You will receive $30 for taking part. In addition, you will be invited to take part in a parenting program that supports your role as a parent and aims to foster physical activity with your adolescent child. In addition, you will be providing important information that will enable the development of future parenting programmes in British Columbia, designed to support parents in the promotion of physical activity with their children.

PURPOSE
The goal of this study is to see how the ways in which people manage their emotions in their daily lives affect their emotional experiences.

THE STUDY
As a participant you will be asked to:

(1) Participate in a brief screening interview.

- Answer a few brief questionnaires about your emotions and experiences. – This usually takes 30 minutes or less. – This interview will take place by phone.

If this study is a good match for you, we may invite you to:

(2) Participate in an in-person interview at SFU. – Answer more in-depth questions about emotions and experiences. – You will be compensated $20 for your time.

(3) Keep track of your emotions several times a day over 1 week. – Using a hand-held computer. – You will be compensated $45 for your time.
